What's more, the game was released in installments on the cell phone, allowing Square Enix to respond to player feedback.

Parasite Eve. Parasite Eve II. The 3rd Birthday. The 3rd Birthday: Parasite Eve Reborn. December 24, New York City is violently torn apart by the Twisted — a race of towering, tentacles monsters that burrow their way through to street level, wrapping themselves around buildings and ominously strangling the Statue of Liberty as the opening cinematic sets the scene beautifully, in typical Square Enix fashion. Welcome to The 3rd Birthday ; it's Parasite Eve reborn. I think it's safe to say that The 3rd Birthday doesn't really enjoy a good reputation in the video game crowd, especially those who are hardcore fans of the Parasite Eve franchise. Times I have mentioned it in the past have been met with negativity in comments, and its aggregate scores hover just around the border between good and bad. Square Enix's attempt to revive the franchise did not go over as well as planned. Amazing production values that pushed the PSP to its limit were just not enough to recapture the spirit of what made the PlayStation originals fantastic. I'm speaking generally, of course, because I'm going to come out and say it. I really enjoyed my time with The 3rd Birthday , much more than I had anticipated I would have. Unlike fans who picked it up when it first came out though, I was prepared for its frayed-edges and off-the-wall storytelling thanks to its poor reputation.
Well, you can keep waiting, because The 3rd Birthday bears very little relation to the series that provides the game's sighing, whimpering lead character, Aya Brea. No wonder Square Enix has positioned it as a spin-off. On the plus side, you can dive into The 3rd Birthday's intertwining narrative without feeling like you've missed anything: you really haven't. For Aya Brea's part, she couldn't fill you in on what happened anyway. She wakes up in a blood-soaked wedding dress in without a single memory of what came before, or why she can transfer her soul from body to body.
