It uses full carbon fibre arms to keep the weight low and a new mm BCD bolt circle diameter makes swapping chainrings real easy. The chainset has been developed to be compatible with the wider 86mm bottom bracket shells with a 30mm diameter axle that FSA developed, and many of the latest road bikes are starting to use. Adapters deal with any compatibility concerns, it can easily be fitted to a regular PF30 or BB30 bottom bracket. To keep the weight low, the crank arms and spider are moulded in carbon fibre with hollow arms and a reinforcing rib to increase stiffness. The driveside crank has the aluminium axle co-moulded to the spider. Five T Torx bolts thread into the chainrings from the inside, and the 5th bolt is concealed behind the crank arm.
By Matthew Allen. Take a closer look, though, and there are five T Torx aluminium chainring bolts that thread in from the inside, the fifth hidden behind the crank — all in the name of stiffness. The design is otherwise conventional, with a 10mm self-extracting crank bolt holding the whole assembly together, and a wave washer to preload the bearings. Thanks to the concealed bolts, the outer chainring blends neatly into the carbon spider. The back is heavily machined, with pronounced shifting ramps, strategically placed pins and weight-saving cutouts. We fitted the K-Force Light to a Shimano Ultegra-equipped Scott Addict with a BB86 bottom bracket shell, which put up some resistance — this is highly installation-specific though.
The combination is a reference point for the entire industry and with few exceptions nothing comes close. The new K-Force, featuring a propriety ring design similar to the one debuted on the latest Dura-Ace cranks, is one such exception. The deficit is as small as the performance gap between Dura-Ace and Ultegra — both the K-Force and Ultegra cranksets perform perfectly well under normal shifting, but retain a minute yet unmistakable shift lag under high pedaling load. Dura-Ace has done away with that lag. Like SRAM, one bolt is now built into the crank arm itself, while the other four are spaced unevenly.
