We were here during Easter and experienced the special atmosphere of the place filled thousands of people, solemn and respectful listening to the Pope celebrating mass. What a wonderful experience to visit this fantastic monument. You could sense the atmosphere and imagine the gladiators fighting the wild animals. Def get jump the queue tickets we didn't have the guided tour but didn't feel we missed out Such an incredible experience. It's a large area and we walked around the whole building and entered the corridors inside the Colosseum.
It commemorates the passion and death of Jesus Christ through the reading of prayers along a path of 14 stations. The tradition as chapel devotion began with St. Francis of Assisi and extended throughout the Roman Catholic Church in medieval times. Today, the Stations of the Cross can be found in almost every Catholic Church and, although it can be done at any time, it is most common during the Season of Lent, on Friday evenings and, especially, on Good Friday. Originally, the Pope himself carried the cross from station to station, but in his last years when age and infirmity limited his strength, John Paul presided over the celebration from a stage on the Palatine Hill, while others carried the cross. Every year a different person is invited to write the meditation texts for the Stations.
They also show the ability of today's young people to look inside themselves and to question themselves on the example of Jesus. For instance, the group chosen by prof. Monda highlight the sufferings of contemporary man. In the 10 th station author Greta Giglio writes that Jesus is stripped of his garments like "a young migrant, a broken body arriving in a land that is too often cruel, ready to take away his garment,… and to sell it; left alone with his cross, like yours, with only his battered skin, like yours, with only his eyes full of great of pain, like yours. In the 14th station the question is posed, "Where did you go, Jesus? The meditation continues, not really in the underworld, but in the interiority of every man, "in our bonds you are caught, in our own sadness you are imprisoned".
Drawing from her experience in fighting the scourge of human trafficking, Sr Bonetti has highlighted the plight of those who are suffering new forms of crucifixion in society today. In Jesus who takes up the cross, we are invited to recognize those facing new forms of crucifixion today: the homeless, young people without hope, employment or future prospects, and immigrants forced to live on the margins of society, after facing incredible suffering. Children too, are discriminated against because of the color of their skin or their social class. Instead, they find humiliation, contempt, and even death. When Jesus falls the first time, we remember the human frailty and weakness of the present-day Samaritans who tend to the many physical and moral wounds of those who live in fear, loneliness and indifference. Unfortunately, we are often no longer capable of seeing those who are in need, writes Sr Bonetti.
