It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. Ferragosto is a widely celebrated national holiday in Italy during the summer. This event involves a horse race around the Piazza in the city. Firework celebrations also take place on evening of Assumption Day. Assumption Day is a nationwide public holiday in Italy.
Italy offers workers 12 paid bank holidays each year 11 national and one local in addition to a minimum of 20 vacation days. It doesn't carry over weekend public holidays to the Monday, meaning the number of days off varies year to year. Even better, seven of the remaining days off fall on a Friday or Monday, meaning it's a bumper year for long weekends - starting with Epiphany on Friday, January 6th. After that however, workers in Italy have to wait until the end of March for another national holiday. But don't be surprised if you see shops shutting up on other days of the year.

The S. Giuseppe Vampa, in Italian fires, is a propitiatory tradition in which the old masses are burned to kick the past and open up to a new future of abundance. They occur on the eve of S. Giuseppe, a carpenter, and in fact old lumber and furniture are burnt. Children make the main part of Pira's construction and adults for safety fire damage. Every neighborhood has its own Vampa, which does not fail despite the prohibitions of lighting fire in the street.
Sicily is a very popular spot for Europeans during the summer due to the hot, shining sun, and warm waters. Since Giulio has a very good friend living out in Palermo we decided to make it our first weekend exploration. The first few days of August were hot as hell in Messina and we knew going into it that Palermo was going to be an inferno. We got lucky and were able to park the car next to the Cassaro Alto , which is only a 5 minute walk to the Duomo. The architecture of this cathedral in impressive along with its size. Once inside the Cathedral you can pay 5 Euros to go up the tower to the top, or 7 Euro to see the top and the catacombs within the Cathedral. We decided to just go to the top and then grab some lunch after.
Sicily is the destination of your summer vacation in You have planned everything. Because you have not yet decided how to spend the most important day of summer in Italy: of course, we are talking about Ferragosto. We can give you some idea. Three, to be precise.

Anyone who has holidayed in Italy in mid-August will know that 15 August is Ferragosto , the national Bank Holiday which sees most of the country shutting up shop and heading for the beach. In Sicily, most activities are focused around the beach, with some towns and villages also organising festivals, processions and fireworks. Not surprisingly, the celebrations spill out across the week. If you like the idea of experiencing a traditional Sicilian holiday this August, we still have villas free in these towns:. Choose from a selection of pretty beaches along the 10km stretch of gorgeous coastline or explore the medieval hilltop villages in the Nebrodi mountains.
