Electronic Arts published a press release on May 21st, highlighting key features in this upcoming title including it being a full reboot for the franchise, and not as a sequel to the Underground series. It features deep customisation, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive plot. The overall focus is on deeper levels of car culture than any previous Need for Speed title, and is centred around the player's car. The look, tone, and real-world level of detail of this title was shaped by EA's own car culture community - Speedhunters. The collaboration was in regards to research, authenticity, and development of the title's urban car culture with past, present, and emerging trends. The title also had an ambitious fan feedback program, with various fans being invited to play early prototype builds of the title, and address feedback based on fan input. All vehicles are unlocked from the beginning of the game and the player only needs to accumulate money to obtain them.
And fun is what this game should be about. One of the things I like about Payback is that it knows what Need for Speed is. You can throw cars around, smash them into barriers, slide the back end out in a satisfying fashion, and use nitrous blasts to right your course or steam past the competition to grab first across the line. This is a cheap, easy thrills kind of racer, and a lot of the time it works brilliantly on those terms. Related: Best racing games.
Need for Speed returns in this, a grossly unremarkable open world racer that marks another step back for the series. Let's go with Tyler Morgan, the figurehead of the three-strong crew you take control of in your attempt to win back the streets of Fortune City, an expansive caricature of Las Vegas that stretches from a city that bustles with casinos out to the dusty wilds. This is Tyler - or 'Ty', to his friends. He is an indistinguishable smear of a human, and after a dozen hours in his presence I can't think of a single defining characteristic of his barely written personality. I think perhaps he's a bit rebellious, because his t-shirt says so, but really it tells you everything that EA decides to lead its return to a more narrative brand of Need for Speed with this complete non-entity of a character. It is, in so many ways, an indistinguishable smear of a video game.
