The KTM EXC-F was already the benchmark for what a bigger-bore off-road racer should be, winning multiple races and championships around the world. KTM has the mantra lighter, faster, stronger for the new generation of off-road bikes in Its not every day you get the opportunity to fly to the other side of the world and ride a complete range of the newest off-road machines. KTM set up a 12km enduro loop and special test track to put the EXCs through their paces for us to report back to you on the new off-road weapons. Lets get straight to the major improvements first. The new ergonomics of the bike have been changed to aid the rider in comfort and also a few cleaver solutions to prevent problems out on the trail.
The bikes are lighter and more rideable, and the all-new two-strokes are revolutionary! And the sweeping changes apply to both the two- and four-stroke models, and across all capacities. And should I be buying one? So, what follows is a snapshot of the responses I gave those mates — from the tell-me-in-one-sentence, executive-summary kinda guy, through to those who wanted a slightly deeper insight into where I thought the bikes had made their most significant advances, and the standout characteristics of each new model. To sit on with your eyes shut, the EXC range only feels marginally different from their predecessors. The two- and four-stroke models are all unquestionably lighter and more agile.
Already top performers as standard models, the Six Days arrive from the factory with multiple performance upgrades such as orange anodized CNC machining triple clamps, front fork preload adjusters, a floating front brake rotor and a solid rear brake rotor.

Now, the manufacturers might have the full intentions of making new bikes better than their old ones. But seriously how much better could the be when compared to model? Enter the all new 48mm Xplor forks. Simply put, the Xplor fork is a collaboration between WP and KTM which maintains the split fork concept from the 4CS forks, with compression in one side, rebound in the other, and springs in each fork leg. Inside, the design and material coatings are quite different which contributes to the massive improvements claimed by KTM. The PDS rear shock systems stays put underneath the orange machine.

KTM took a different approach to the configuration of the motor than most other manufacturers. While others used a 90mm-plus bore piston with a very short stroke of 60mm, the KTM RFS motor used an 89mm x 64mm boiconfiguration which provided more torque at the expense of higher RPM's. This was the first year of the EXC model. It evolved from the earlier EXC model, with an increased displacement via a longer stroke. These years saw a new frame. Improving the handling without major changes. Rear body work changed to the single piece design off the SX model.
