Ponza is the main island of the pontine archipelago. Just in front of the Lazio coast, Ponza prides itself on a very rich landscape and biological diversity, just as its virgin wilderness, underwater caves and also its culinary tradition. Ferries leave from the Gulf of Gaeta, just opposite the isle of Ponza. Listing also the hydrofoil sailings, during summer, Ponza is connected to the mainland by numerous sailings. The ferries to Ponza leave from Formia, Terracina, Anzio and San Felice Circeo and they take around 2 hours and a half to get to the isle.
Just wondering why the easiest trip is to go from Formia over Anzio. I ask because the Anzio hydrofoil seems to give you more time on Ponza if you're only going for a weekday. Is it just a lot easier to get from the train to the port in Formia? I just did the trip from Anzio a couple weeks ago. We left from Anzio. It's an early day but we got to the Roma Termini before train left for Anzio just in time. It leaves at to get to Anzio for but the later train, depending on the hydrofoil timetable for the day, doesn't give enough time to get to the port.

Ferries Anzio Ponza
Ponza is called the Pearl of the Mediterranean islands. Strangely, since it is somewhat closer to us than Capri, Ischia and Elba, we had never been. On a whim, we grabbed an opportunity and took off the last Sunday of August — the very day that the August crowds were leaving the island. While many visitors rent scooters for the island that has only one narrow road, we took our car on the Formia — Ponza ferry boat. The relative proximity made it feasible for a short 5 day mini-break from our Genius Loci season. Fortunate enough to have visited the South Pacific, the Caribbean and Florida, I must admit that the Mediterranean islands are my favorite. I love the light of the amazing grottos and the typical cactus pears.
