Lower Antelope Slot Canyon is one of the most exquisitely photographed attractions in the American Southwest.

Antelope Canyon is one of the most photographed sites in the entire state of Arizona — but there are a few things you should know before you go to avoid disappointment. One of the most popular questions before visiting the Canyon is whether or not you should book a tour guide. Please know that you can not enter Antelope Canyon without a native Navajo guide. Therefore it is not only recommended to book a tour, but absolutely necessary. There are two departure points for tours — Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon. The prime times for tours are: 10am, 11am, and 12pm.

Lower Antelope Canyon is a gorgeous place to visit. With its glowing red canyon walls and narrow, twisting passageways, this place is fun to visit and a joy to photograph. With its darker canyon walls, falling sands, and light beams shining through the dusty air, the Upper canyon has been the more popular of the two slot canyons. Until even just a few years ago, Lower Antelope Canyon had the reputation of being the canyon to visit if you wanted smaller crowds of people. Not so, not anymore.

With its glowing, red canyon walls and beams of light shining through the dusty air, Antelope Canyon is a breathtaking destination. Two different slot canyons make up Antelope Canyon and both offer very different experiences. If you can only visit one, how do you decide which one? Antelope Canyon is located in Page, Arizona. Both slot canyons are located on Navajo lands and can only be visited on a tour.

The interior of the canyon remains constantly cool and comfortable. As you marvel at the swirling shapes of the sandstone walls, chiseled over millions of years by intense flood waters and blowing sand, the shifting sun overhead casts a spell of constantly changing colors within the canyon. Flaxen, amber, tangerine, mahogany, salmon, plum, and shades too subtle to name, compose your pictures beautifully contrasted against the blue sky above. Your Navajo guide will give you excellent guidance on how to get the best photos, even with the simplest of cell phone cameras. In Lower Antelope Canyon, the same intermittently flowing creek has hewn yet another spectacular slot canyon, only this time, flood waters have taken the path of least resistance, tunneling down deep into the sandstone bedrock, eventually emptying into Lake Powell. Thousands of visitors annually agree that Lower Antelope Canyon is every bit as incredible as Upper, but it does require a bit more physical output on your part: a minute walk from the check-in pavilion to the mouth of the canyon, descending a short series of ladders to enter the meter long slot canyon, managing a few more ladders, staircases, and maybe a boulder or two. Lastly, you ascend a final series of ladders to exit the canyon, then walk back to your vehicle.

Antelope Canyon

I highly recommend that if you are visiting this part of the country to also check out the eBook on Amazon called Hidden Gems of the Western United States for more inspiring places to visit in this region! Lower Antelope is less populated with tourists, cheaper to visit, longer, and the canyon spaces are much tighter inside the canyon walls., Arizona is known for its impressive natural attractions, but one of its most astonishing sites is Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon near Page.
