Pink Floyd has produced a long list of classics—and inspired multiple covers—in the 50 years since the band first got together. If imitation is truly the highest form of flattery, then the artists below have revealed themselves as true fans of the band, for better or worse. Here's a list of Pink Floyd covers from Newsweek 's special edition on the band. Though Barrett was alive at the time of the album's release, the tone and lyrics express feelings of grief and mourning. In , late Sparklehorse lead singer Mark Linkous recorded an emotional cover of the song with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. In an interesting take, Thom Yorke sings his part over the phone from his hotel room—you can hear the sound of his TV in the background. This three-part song was released on Pink Floyd's album The Wall , and it features themes of oppression, conformity and rebellion.

Skipping beats and country-style finger-picking might not be typical Floyd territory but they pull it off with panache. However, this cavernous guitar overture, reputedly recorded in a single take, digs long and deep into the soul, and stands as one of the high-points of the post-Roger Waters era. The instrumental break is a brilliant example of how to inculcate the avant-garde into a hit single. With Mason and Waters tethered to earth, Wright and Syd Barrett hurtle spaceward in an explosion of billowing organ and incendiary flashes of ascending glissando guitar created, rumour has it, with the aid of a plastic ruler. An apt swansong for the Waters era, on many levels.

Luckily, the covers community has obliged, allowing us a list as discursive as Pink Floyd itself. A band that, for better or worse, can get pigeonholed into a specific sound and era, gets transformed into a whole host of other genres and moods. Psychedelic rock is represented here, of course, but so is bluegrass, soul, and disco. Though the latter would certainly appreciate the walls being torn down. Some turn them into tight four-minute pop songs. Others, if you can believe it, extend the songs further.

Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London in They emerged from London's underground music scene during the late s, and became one of the most commercially successful and influential groups in popular music history. Gaining a following as a psychedelic band, they were distinguished for their extended compositions , sonic experimentation, philosophical lyrics and elaborate live shows , and became a leading band of the progressive rock genre.

Although the guitars are a little too crunchy, they leave well enough alone with the saxophone and keyboard sections. This is straight-up Voidvod playing their version of the classic song, all ingredients being filtered through their brand of spacey thrash metal. I think that by interpreting the song as they saw fit, taking tasteful liberties whilst being respectful all the way, Voivod have succeeded in making a great cover. When Floyd wanted to rock, they accomplished said task with aplomb. I wish Dave Grohl and Co.
