Fai bei sogni

Fai bei sogni (Sweet Dreams) en espanol /Genre Drama

Fai Bei Sogni

Fai Bei Sogni Sweet Dreams. The film effectively conveys the emptiness of the protagonist, Massimo, following the death of his beloved mother and we watch as he grows from a nine-year-old boy to a man carrying the burden of grief on his shoulders. As a child he refuses to accept his loss and as a man he struggles to confront his past as he returns to his childhood home, which is now his responsibility to sell. Whilst the structure can at times evoke a sense of confusion in the viewer, this cinema adaptation of the true story published by journalist Massimo Gramellini feels stunningly real. Sweet Dreams also serves as a tribute to Italian culture and a nostalgic exploration of how important family and religion has been to Italy in recent history.

Is it a striking coincidence that for the second year in a row we have an Italian film in which a man is grappling with the death of his mother? It is a major effort by an auteur whose body of work is impressive to begin with. The film is based on a novel of the same name by journalist Massimo Gramellini, an autobiographical story of how the death of a mother has a profound effect on a young son, so profound that it takes him half a lifetime to fully come to terms with it. One night, Massimo is woken by a cry of his father, and his mother is never seen again. While his family tries to hide what happened to her, the confused young kid refuses to accept his mother not being there. Cabras, honest and wide-eyed, is heartbreaking in these scenes, as he slowly starts to realize that his mother is dead, putting his young life in turmoil.
