Check out our FREE math video lessons! What do we mean by the equation of a circle? A circle is a nice, simple, round geometric object; while equations are — well — equations! Circles are everywhere in nature! These circular waves are the result of dropping a small pebble in water. There are formulas that compute area and other quantities, but formulas are not quite the same as equations. In fact the equation of a circle is not for finding area, but instead provides an algebraic way to describe a circle.

Circle Equations MathBitsNotebook. A circle is a conic section. It is a slice of a right cone parallel to the circular base of the cone. In this section, we will be examining this "circular slice" as to its properties and equations in relation to the coordinate plane. Derivation of the Circle Formula With a little help from the Pythagorean Theorem, we can easily verify the circle equation formulas.

Circle Equations. circle. A circle is easy to make: Draw a curve that is "radius" away from a central point. And so: All points are the same distance from the center.

A circle is the set of all points in a plane at a given distance called the radius from a given point called the center. A line segment connecting two points on the circle and going through the center is called a diameter of the circle. Assume that x , y are the coordinates of a point on the circle shown. The center is at h , k , and the radius is r. Use the Distance Formula to find the equation of the circle. General Form of the Equation of a Circle

Completing the Square: Circle Equations. This form of the equation is helpful, since you can easily find the center and the radius. This lesson explains how to make that conversion.

Equation of a Circle Explained

The distance around a rectangle or a square is as you might remember called the perimeter. The distance around a circle on the other hand is called the circumference c. A line that is drawn straight through the midpoint of a circle and that has its end points on the circle border is called the diameter d. Half of the diameter, or the distance from the midpoint to the circle border, is called the radius of the circle r. A circle is a simple closed shape. It is the set of all points in a plane that are at a given distance from a given point, the centre ; equivalently it is the curve traced out by a point that moves in a plane so that its distance from a given point is constant. The distance between any of the points and the centre is called the radius. This article is about circles in Euclidean geometry , and, in particular, the Euclidean plane, except where otherwise noted. A circle is a simple closed curve that divides the plane into two regions: an interior and an exterior.

Draw a curve that is "radius" away from a central point. Circle: The set of all points on a plane that are a fixed distance from a center.
