I'm a massive fan of the Lagavulin; much less "medicinal" tasting than Laphroaig. That said, I'm still mostly an Ardbeg guy if we're talking Islay.

From this starting point, it would depend on what do you enjoy the most, in order to select the next ones. Vasco lists the definitive core "official bottlings", also check out Caol Ila 12 and Port Charlotte 10 for a slightly different smokiness then the Port Ellen distillery cluster in the south of Islay Bunnahaiban and Kilhoman also produce some quality smoky whisky For more medicinal smoke I recommend 10yo Laphroaig or 16 yo Lagavulin. Bunch of celebratory occasions coming up for me and my family, and I'd like to buy a relatively nice bottle of scotch for us to share. Which do you prefer: Lag 16, Laphroaig 10, or something else? My go-to has always been macallan It works for me and i see no reason to switch. Dont me scotch snobs. Both Islay, peaty single malts. Lag is definitely my favorite of the two.
