Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City - Walkthrough Part 1: The Dreg Heap

the   the   the    the way you smile lyrics

Dark Souls 3 received its last DLC content today, and players can now log in to the game and begin their journey into the new area included in Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City. The first way is to have completed the main game and beaten the final boss. Make your way to the Kiln of the First Flame, and then turn around after warping in to the bonfire. Look for another bonfire a short distance away. Touch this bonfire and activate it to be transported to the Dreg Heap, the opening area of the new DLC. First, locate the Painter in the attic of Ariandel Chapel.

The Ringed City DLC is the second and final DLC for Dark Souls 3. It was announced on January 23rd, by Bandai Namco and released.

Instead, it suggests that, like so many raging undead, Dark Souls has lost touch with its purpose, the melancholy struggle that defined its success. Unfortunately, the Heap quickly proves itself more interesting to look at than to play through. Despite the frequent drops into fall-breaking piles of ash, traversing its terrain is less about navigating the jumbled labyrinth of a sideways city, and more about never, ever slowing down. The goal seems to be to short-circuit the instincts FromSoftware has spent an entire series instilling in players, trashing caution in favor of a series of hectic dashes. To ensure these perils carry their proper goading weight, meanwhile, enemy damage has been scaled up to what feels like punishing rates. Instead of an oscillating curve, alternating stiff resistance with gradual success, it feels more like slamming into a series of brick walls.

Gorgeous but empty, challenging but not always fair, The Ringed City is a weak reflection of the series' best traits. What is it? Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City rushes through the series' history like an unhinged amusement park ride. With some of the worst level and encounter design of the series, The Ringed City blows by its dreary themes and thin story beats by constantly pushing the player towards an inevitable, obvious conclusion. All of time and space is converging towards a single point, a city created long before the events of the original Dark Souls. The early environments are a literal descent through Dark Souls history, starting with imagery from Dark Souls 3, onto Dark Souls 2, and finally the original Dark Souls, before moving on to some completely new spaces.

One last guide, to rule them all. Did it answer all our questions? Has it wrapped everything up? Absolutely not, and if you were expecting that to happen then Hidetaka Miyazaki beat you before you even started. The Ringed City is a fittingly mysterious, suitably challenging end to the Dark Souls series, and it has been turning me into a nervous wreck for the last week.
