The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 green comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 yellow the second highest values, Q3 orange the third highest values and Q4 red the lowest values. The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is. This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal.

The Journal of Biological Chemistry is a weekly peer-reviewed scientific journal that was established in It covers research in areas of biochemistry and molecular biology. The editor-in-chief is Lila Gierasch. In press articles are available free on its website immediately after acceptance. The following individuals have served as editor-in-chief of the journal:. The editors of the Journal of Biological Chemistry have criticized the modern reliance upon the impact factor for ranking journals, noting that review articles , commentaries, and retractions are included in the calculation. Further, the denominator of total articles published encourages journals to be overly selective in what they publish, and preferentially publish articles which will receive more attention and citations.

The Journal of Biological Chemistry welcomes high-quality science that seeks to elucidate the molecular and cellular basis of biological processes. The outcome of our focus on papers that contribute novel and important mechanistic insights, rather than on a particular topic area, is that JBC is truly a melting pot for scientists across disciplines. In addition, JBC welcomes papers that describe methods that will help scientists push their biochemical inquiries forward and resources that will be of use to the research community. Beyond the consideration of any one particular article, our mission as a journal is to bring significant, enduring research to the scientific community. We believe it is our responsibility to safeguard the research we publish by providing high-quality review and maintaining strict standards on data presentation and deposition.

  1. Scientific publishing has undergone massive change in the past two decades, and the landscape is shifting.

  2. When I was approached about putting my name in the hat for the Editor-in-Chief position at JBC, a mini-tsunami of thoughts splashed through my brain.
