"The Luminous Fish Effect" is the fourth episode of the first season of the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Leonard decides that only one person can help Sheldon get back to his normal life: Sheldon's mother Mary Cooper. Leonard comes back to find Sheldon experimenting with.

The episode starts off with Leonard and Sheldon in their apartment getting dressed up for a party as Sheldon explains that if he ever invented a time machine he would go back in time and give him the time machine so he would never have to make it. As they go out of the house he complains about how he will hate the party saying the last one he went to he had to listen to a conversation about caves which he remarks there is nothing interesting about caves. The show then continues at the party which turns out to be a welcoming party for the new head of the university Dr. Eric Gablehauser. Sheldon complains about how he has not made a real contribution to science as Raj gets excited over the buffet and how it's not all Indian food as Howard walks in with a date, but when he tries to touch her she whispers that it would cost him extra hinting he payed her to be their. Sheldon is introduced to Dr. Gablehauser and immediatly insults him by introducing himself as a real scientist and the next scene briefly shows Sheldon talking about how he was fired and Leonard tells him that it was probably due to Sheldon insulting him.

Leonard decides that only one person can help Sheldon get back to his normal life: Sheldon's mother Mary Cooper. Sheldon is displeased with Gablehauser because he feels that he is unworthy. After telling him, he is swiftly fired. Penny comes in and asks if Sheldon needs any groceries. He also mentions her check engine light for the first time.

While at a party, he couldn't help but insult his boss, a lesser scientist in Sheldon's eyes. After losing his job, Sheldon does a few experiments with scrambled eggs and luminous fish. It's the first time we've seen Sheldon talk about the possibilities of becoming rich, by selling his "fish night-lights" to the masses.
