Gerrit van Honthorst was Born in Utrecht on 4 November, , Honthorst, the son of a painter of tapestry cartoons, was first trained by Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht and later went to Rome. Influenced strongly by the work of Caravaggio, Honthorst soon became much in demand in Rome. He was patronized by the Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani and by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, who was later also the patron of the sculptor Bernini. On his return to Utrecht, in , Honthorst came to play a leading role in the civic life of the town, being dean of the painters' guild on four occasions between and In he spent six busy and profitable months in England at the invitation of Charles I. After his return to Utrecht he remained an internationally admired figure.

The procuress can be found in several paintings by Honthorst as an old, ugly woman with a headscarf wound into a turban. Here she even becomes the titular namesake of the work. Matchmakers were responsible for the mediation of prostitutes, for example to brothels or clients. In society they were met with particular rejection, which is why they were usually portrayed in a not particularly flattering manner. The facial expressions and gestures of the procuress depicted here point to the young woman, who is about to persuade the man sitting opposite her into business with her seductive intentions. Despite official prohibitions, venal love flourished in metropolises such as Rome and Amsterdam. Prostitutes, as in Honthorst's work, were often nobly and colourfully dressed, and also frequented the higher social classes.

Deep Chiaroscuro. An absolute favourite by the Dutch Master. Gerard van Honthorst, a well known Dutch Caravaggisti, often painted scenes of merry making and gatherings, complimented beautifully with contrasting lights and shadows. Truly, his works are captivating and beautiful. What I personally love in these paintings are his animated and often drunk subjects. What are they thinking? What could they be saying?
